What is NEFT?

NEFT is a banking payment system service through which money can be transferred from one bank account to another. Through this, the account holder of any bank can transfer money to the account holder of another bank. 

This service is available in almost all the banks in India today. Account holders of the bank where this facility will be available can use it and can take advantage of online money transfer. 

NEFT was launched by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) in November 2005. IDRBT is an engineering institute set up by the Reserve Bank in 1996. 

Hence it would be correct to say that NEFT is a service introduced by the Reserve Bank. NEFT is an online payment electronic funds transfer system. It does not transfer money in real-time like IMPS (Immediate Payment System) but in hourly batches. 


Today this service is the most used in India after IMPS. Almost all the banks in India are providing the benefit of this service to their customers. Eg :- Bank of Baroda, Indian Bank, Central Bank of India, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, United Bank, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, IDBI Bank, Punjab National Bank, etc.

It works in 23 settlement between 8 am to 7:30 pm. Fund transfer is done in the form of batches every half an hour. Funds cannot be transferred through NEFT on Sundays, 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month and also on other festive days.

How does NEFT work?

The facility of National Electronic Funds Transfer is provided to the customers in two ways. Consumers can use this service both online and offline. Let us know how both online NEFT and offline NEFT work. 

To transfer money through NEFT online, the consumer will first have to activate internet banking in his account. After which he can use this service online. Apart from this, there are some banks which are providing the benefit of this service to their customers through ATM. That is, the consumer can also do NEFT through ATM. 

To transfer money through this, first you must have the bank details of the beneficiary. Eg :- Bank Name, Account Holder Name, Account Number, Branch Name, Account Type, IFSC Code, etc. After entering all the bank details, submit and send the information to the bank. 

After which the bank prepares the information given by the consumer in the form of a message and sends it to the pooling center, which is also called NEFT Service Center. After this, that message is sent by the pooling center to the NEFT Clearing Center. So that that message can be included for the next available batch. It is run by the National Clearing Cell of the Reserve Bank of India, which has its office in Mumbai. 

The clearing center then sorts all the funds according to the destination bank. After this, after receiving the funds from the sender's bank, the receiver prepares the receiving entries for sending to the bank. After this the message is forwarded to the receiving bank one by one. After which the receiver receives the message from the bank clearing center and credits the money to the beneficiary's account. 

How to use NEFT?

NEFT (NEFT) is very easy to use. For this you need to have a bank account. NEFT can be used both online and offline. Apart from this, there are some banks which also provide the facility of using this service through ATM. 

Internet banking must be activated in your bank account to transfer money online through NEFT. So for this, first of all you have to activate internet banking. After this you will get a username and password, through which you have to log in to Internet Banking. 

After logging in, select the fund transfer option and select NEFT in the transfer type. After this, enter the bank details of the person you want to transfer money. Eg :- Bank Name, Account Holder Name, Account Number, Branch Name, Account Type, IFSC Code, etc. After that click on the submit button and transfer the money by entering the OTP sent to the registered number. 

Apart from this, if you want to do NEFT offline, then for this you have to go to the branch of your bank. Receive the NEFT form from the branch. After that fill all the information asked in the form, sender bank account details and receiver bank account details. And then deposit it in the bank. After which the money will be debited from your account by the bank. and will be credited to the receiver's bank account. 

How to transfer money through NEFT?

How to transfer money through NEFT online?

  • Internet banking must be activated in your bank account to do NEFT online. If internet banking service is not activated in your account, then you can get it activated by visiting the branch. Or you can also activate it online through ATM card. 
  • Now go to the official website of your bank. 
  • After that go to Internet Banking option and log in using Username, Password. 
  • Now click on the option of Fund Transfer. 
  • And the one you want to transfer money, add it first. 
  • To add Beneficiary, click on Add Payee or Add New Beneficiary. 
  • After that fill the bank details of the person you want to add. Eg :- Bank Name, Account Holder Name, Account Number, Branch Name, Account Type, IFSC Code, etc.
  • After filling all the asked information click on submit. 
  • After this, you have to wait till the added beneficiary is approved by the bank. It takes 30 to 40 minutes. 
  • After the beneficiary is added, now again go to Fund Transfer, and select NEFT in the transfer type. 
  • After that select beneficiary. 
  • After selecting the beneficiary, enter the amount of money you want to transfer. 
  • After writing the amount, click on Pay, Fund Transfer, or Submit button and transfer the money. 
  • After this, the money will be credited to the beneficiary's account according to the batch timing of his bank. 

How to transfer money through NEFT offline?

Through NEFT, you can transfer money offline by visiting your bank branch. If internet banking facility is not activated in your bank account, then you can easily transfer money offline also. Let's know:
  • To transfer money offline, first of all visit your bank branch. 
  • After that get the NEFT / RTGS form from the bank. 
  • Enter all the information asked in the form. Like bank name, account number, branch, IFSC code, etc. You have to fill all this information in the form. 
  • In the Beneficiary section of the form, you have to write the bank information of the person to whom you want to transfer money. And write the amount of money you want to transfer. 
  • After that the option of NEFT or RTGS will be found above, in which you have to tick on NEFT. 
  • After filling the form, re-check all the information once. 
  • After this, the officers or employees of the bank, who do NEFT, submit the form to them. 
  • After which the bank official after verifying all your information debits the money from your account. 
  • and transfers to the beneficiary's account, completing the further process. 

How much money can be transferred in NEFT? - NEFT Limit

A limit for transferring money through NEFT has been set by the RBI (Reserve Bank of India). According to this, you cannot transfer funds more than the prescribed limit in a day. If you want to transfer money through NEFT, then you have to take special care of this. 

The limit for transferring funds through NEFT is a minimum of Re 1 and a maximum of Rs 10 lakh. That is, in a day you can transfer from Rs 1 to Rs 10 lakh in any account through NEFT. You cannot transfer more than this in a day through this.

What is the difference between NEFT and RTGS?

This is a slow method of transferring funds. This is a fast method of fund transfer.
In this transaction charges are less than RTGS. In this transaction charges are more than NEFT.
In this, money can be transferred both online and offline. Money can also be transferred in RTGS both online and offline.
